Maui Through a Local’s Eye: Shep Gordon
I’ve been lucky to know Shep my entire life. As a dear friend of my father’s, I grew up running around in his yard with other kids my age who were just as oblivious as I was about all the mega-players gathered around one of his famous round dinner tables. I recall him saying he likes them like that (the tables) because the round shape leaves no room for hierarchy. He radiates that kind of humility the moment he opens the door to his 70’s style home. He’s usually wearing a sarong, no matter the occasion, and greets whoever comes through with a kiss on the cheek and an “aloha.” That may be it. He’s a man of few words, but there’s a palpable depth to his presence and an essence of a long life… lived.
I’ve secretly admired Shep since I developed the cognition to understand he’s living the dream (or at least, my dream). Shep Gordon AKA Supermensch, the legendary talent manager and entertainment industry icon, has been a local to Maui since 1974. An achiever by nature, he’s made industry-shaping, history-making moves all from his beachfront home on the south shore of our small, beautiful island. That’s called having your cake and eating it too.
Known for his innovative approach to artist management and his uncanny ability to spot talent, Gordon's career is a testament to his passion, tenacity, and vision. From managing some of the biggest names in music to revolutionizing the culinary world, Shep Gordon's story is one of creativity, resilience, and boundless entrepreneurial and philanthropical spirit.
On island, he’s just “Shep,” and we all know and love him.
I caught up with Shep to get some local intel as well as a bit of the backstory on his deep romance with Maui. Join us as we delve into the extraordinary life and career of this legendary impresario.
