Fall Foods on Maui: Local Ingredients for Healthy Season
Eating locally and seasonally is not only a smart way to support local farmers, but it also keeps you connected to the rhythms of nature—and it’s healthier! When you eat what’s in season, you’re getting fruits and veggies at their peak freshness, loaded with all the nutrients your body needs right now. If you’re into Ayurveda, you know it’s vata season (hello, dry and airy energy), which means grounding foods are key for keeping you balanced. Thankfully, nature provides just that in the form of hearty squashes, root veggies, and other fall favorites grown right here on Maui.
Kabocha Squash
Kabocha squash, aka Japanese pumpkin, is the MVP of fall veggies. It’s creamy, sweet, and super versatile—perfect for roasting, tossing into soups, or turning into a dreamy curry. Plus, it’s loaded with nutrients that’ll keep your glow game strong. A local hack? Roast it with a bit of Hawaiian sea salt and mac nut oil for an easy side dish that feels gourmet.
Taro (Kalo)
Taro is basically the OG plant-based superfood of Hawaii. It’s been used here for centuries and is a nutritional powerhouse—fiber, vitamins, you name it. It can actually be planted and harvested at any time during the year, but we love it’s sweet earthiness especially in the fall. So grounding! Most people think of it as poi, but taro is great steamed, mashed, or fried into taro fries too. Our personal fave is when taro is powdered and made into desserts and drinks for a coconut-vanilla-y taste that is just so satisfying.
Sweet Potatoes (ʻUala)
Sweet potatoes on Maui come in vibrant purple and orange varieties, and they’re pretty much nature’s candy. Bake ‘em, mash ‘em, or slice ‘em into chips. They’re ridiculously sweet on their own but sprinkle a little cinnamon, and you’ve got the perfect fall treat.
Jackfruit
Known for its meaty texture and neutral taste when cooked from its underripe state, jackfruit is a tropical delight that’s amazing in savory dishes like tacos or stir-fries. When ripe, it tastes like juicy fruit gum. It’s rich in antioxidants and fiber, making it a perfect plant-based option for hearty fall meals.
Breadfruit (ʻUlu)
Breadfruit, or ʻulu, is a total hidden gem for plant-based peeps. This starchy fruit is super filling and works as a perfect base for everything from tacos to fries. It’s got a mild flavor and takes on whatever seasonings you throw its way. Think of it as your new potato, but way cooler.
