Beyond Lahaina: 5 Year-Round Outdoor Adventures in West Maui
Lahaina's charm is undeniable, but while the town rebuilds from the wildfires of 2023, we can zoom out to discover other ways to support West Maui beyond its historic streets. From mystical trails to heart-pumping cliff jumps, here's your guide to living it up in West Maui, year-round.
Hike at Honolua Bay Access Trail
Reconnect with nature by taking a walk along the Honoula Bay Access Trail. There’s something mystical about this path that makes it feel like you’ve stepped into the pages of your favorite childhood stories.
It’s just a 20-minute drive from Lahaina, with two nearby parking lots. Start on the trail near the beach and follow it into the forest. It’s open year-round and is a quick hike (around 15 minutes), so make sure to take a camera because there’s definitely time to stop and admire the breath-taking views. (SIDE NOTE: Unfortunately, no furry friends are allowed!)
Cliff Jump at Kapalua Bay
Kapalua Bay is one of the best family-friendly beaches in Maui and is popular for snorkeling, with plenty of resorts nearby. While it’s gained notoriety after being named ‘America’s Best Beach’ in 2018, the Kapalua Coastal Trail at Kapalua Bay is our go-to destination for cliff jumping.
You’ll find some of the best cliffs hidden along the coastal trail from Kapalua Beach. (This cliff jumping is best for experienced thrill-seekers and is guaranteed to be the highlight of your weekend.)
Surf at Olowalu
Just 4 miles from Lahaina, Olowalu is the largest reef on Maui. Whether you’re getting on a surfboard for the first time or want to take it a little easier, this is one of the best places for surf lessons on the island. The waves stay consistent and are smaller, ideal for beginner and intermediate surfers. (HOT TIP: Be sure to use Surfline for the latest Maui surf forecast to find the best time to paddle out!)
ATV Adventure in West Maui Mountains
Why stick to the beach when you can rev up an ATV and tear through the West Maui mountains? This isn't just a ride; it's an adventure through Mauna Kahālāwai, offering breathtaking ocean views and a sneak peek at hidden waterfalls.
Perfect for couples and friend squads alike, a 90-minute ATV adventure reveals the rugged beauty of Maui far from the beaten path.
Snorkel at Napili Bay
Napili Bay, just 15 minutes from Lahaina, is prime for snorkeling and sea turtle spotting! Its sandy cove is much more low-key and less commercialized than the beach resorts you’ll find elsewhere in Maui. A serene escape with turtles… you couldn’t ask for more!
